I.S.S. Over Manistique

International Space Station - Aug 2006
Backdropped by a colorful Earth, this full view of the International Space Station, August 2005,
was photographed from the Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-114 "Return to Flight"
mission, following the undocking of the two spacecraft.

MAIN TEXT REVISED: 08/22/06

International Space Station Orbit Pass Times Over Manistique and Vicinity

NOTES:

On August 28, 2005, some basic physical statistics of the I.S.S. were:

Mass: 183,283 kg
Width: 73 m (across solar arrays)
Length: 44.5 m (along core)
Height: 27.5 m
Living volume: 425 m³

It is sufficiently large to be visible from Earth.

More information may be found at:

Present status of the International Space Station

Data lines ending with * denote visible passes of the space station,
illuminated by the sun, against a clear "night" sky. The period of
visibility depends on the degree of sky "darkness" and the distance
between the spacecraft and the Earth's shadow.

Several weeks may pass between visible passes, depending on orbital
mechanics.

The visibility of the space craft, during visible passes on cloudless
nights, may be degraded by various environmental influences; including:
fog, smog, haze, moonlight, local horizon, electric lighting, campfires,
observer's visual acuity, etc. The I.S.S. appears like a moving bright
star when overhead, and the apparent brightness decreases with increasing
distance from the observer, making it difficult to see at the horizon.

The distance of the I.S.S. from the observer, and therefore its visibility,
varies as its angular height above the horizon, approximately, as follows:

Elevation (degrees) Distance (statute miles)

0 1400
10 880
20 600
30 450
40 365
50 311
60 279
70 259
80 247
90 243

Pay attention to the "MAX VISIBILITY" elevation, azimuth, and time values.
They provide a point of reference so that you are facing the correct area
of the sky, instead of the opposite direction. IE. Stand, facing the "MAX
VISIBILITY" elevation and azimuth, and then move your head and torso,
only, to look at that part of the sky in which the I.S.S. is located, for
the particular time of observation.

Some passes will disappear into the Earth's shadow.

Sometimes the solar panels reflect a bright "flare".

The accuracy of these times are subject to cumulative errors from
the "Prepared" date of calculation due to the physics of the
varying space environment and the major effects of deliberate orbit
modification to overcome the orbital decay processes, avoid orbiting
"space junk", meet new mission requirements, etc. If the predicted
times are incorrect, significantly, please let me know.

For visual observation purposes, the errors due to the varying space
environment will be of little to no consequence except for extremely
short duration paths predicted further into the future. Errors due to
deliberate orbit modification will likely create immediate and
significant errors between the old calculated times, based on the old
orbit characteristics, and new calculations required by the new orbit
characteristics.

The time period of each I.S.S. orbit, around the Earth, is approximately
1hr 32min 17sec.

Monitor radio and tv news for spacecraft missions to the I.S.S. Conditions
permitting, both the I.S.S. and the Space Shuttle or Russian "Progress"
resupply rocket may be seen closing or separating, from one visible pass
to the next.

The common "scanner" frequencies, below, may have ISS related activity.
Use your scanner search function during passes to locate other
frequencies. Please inform me of new ones you may find.
